Short Interview with Ahmed Soultan

Ahmed Soultan (born 1978) is a Berber singer from Morocco. His work fuses traditional Arab music, hip-hop, rap, ra� and soul. The pseudonym "Soultan" comes from "soul", the musical style, and "tan". He has never declared his true surname.

He was born in a village in the district of Souss and emigrated to France while very young. In 2005, Soultan was invited to take part in the Dakar International Festival of Film and was a supporting artist in a concert by Tiken Jah Fakoly. He went on to explore the African music of Morocco, recording in duet with the Senegalese singer King Bara.

Wafin.com: Where did you grow up?
Soultan: I was born in Taroudant (southern Morocco) and moved to France at 2 years old.

Wafin.com: Where do you live now?
Soultan: I moved back to Morocco in 1996 but since my first album in 2005/06 i'm living between Paris and Agadir/Casablanca.

Wafin.com: How did you discover singing?
Soultan: I started to produce music for my sister , and i was singing to show her the melodies i had on my head, so this is the way i discovered that i can probably sing too.

Wafin.com: Where do you perform?
Soultan: I performed for few african and arab's tv and radio channels, but my real live session is coming this year with my first festival in Fes 06/02/2009.

Wafin.com: What are the CD's you have launched?
Soultan: two albums "Tolerance" in 2005/06 and "Code" 2009

Wafin.com: Who is you favorite Singer (s)?
Soultan: I am not fan of someone in particular....

Wafin.com: Any advice to aspiring singers?
Soultan: Patience is the key.
